Summary: After the attack Selia decides to try her hand at cooking Dire Wolf. Yum! | |||||||

It had been an hour or to since the attack by the three large wolves that all now lay dead. The camp is busy cleaning up, though the fallen horse no one is going near till Saide has had her time with it. Its taking two or three people to move each wolf corpse due to their unusually large size. Nearly seven feet long and roughly three and a half feet at the shoulder they are hardly small. One's fur is a light gray, another is nearly black, and the last one is more of a medium shade of gray. They all have suffered multiple stab wounds, the black one especially as close to half the camp took that one down.
Selia stands looking at the wolves and chews her lip. Too much meat to prepare for a meal obviously. She smiles and returns to her truck bag returning to the wolves with a skinning knife. Kneeling she carefully begins to remove the pelts. Just because they have stab wounds does not mean they are worthless. But she is very glad that they had been field dressed. after an hour the inner meats would have been bad. A slit with the very sharp knife up each leg connecting with the belly cut. the she removes the head. She is not at all squeamish. Pealing the skin off the meat is fairly easy. She does the first one and let someone else peel the other two. Then she begins to cut off the lower legs. These she places aside to be buried. "maybe smoke the big pieces." she says to herself. She disjoints the large wolf until there are really 6 or 7 fairly large pieces.

Selia is able to get the cuts she wants from the corpse of the first wolf. She gets a few odd looks from others in the camp, though she doesn't appear to be harming anything so no one tries to stop her either. Now that she has the pieces she wants, the question becomes what to do with them.
Selia moving the body to the tarpaulin. She stops and looks at them. Not knowing how long they will be at this camp She decides to spit on thigh over hot coals. She'll decide what to do with the rest as she goes along. two forked sticks. one long one shoved down the length of the bone and then placed on the forks. She moves to find the herbs that she had collected earlier and began to smash them with a small clove of garlic and a bit of onion in a stone mortar with a pestle. once almost a paste she moves back to the joint and begins to rub it all over the meat. She nods to one of the other commoners, "Would you turn it for me until I get the rest of this prepared?"

The other commoner gives Selia a look as though to say 'What are you doing?', but remains silent and does as told, at least till Selia can do things for herself. Selia is able to get the herbs from her supplies without too much trouble and seems to prepare a very good meat rub out of it, as the smell drifts through the camp giving an overall pleasant smell to the immediate area.
The joint over the fire being turned by one of the others. She adds tubers to the coals. Selia gets busy slicing up as much of the rest of the wolf as she can. Large pieces and small. but trying to get them as thin as possible. These she salts and spreds out on the tarpaulin to dry. She gets so involved in this that she forgets about the joint that is cooking. It is the smell of charring that brings her back. she looks over to the fire and the man has gotten up to do an errand for one of the knights and she forgot to turn the meat. She looks at it and sighs. Hurrying over to it she pulls it off the flames and shrugs, "If I cut off all the black and boil the rest.... hmm better than nothing."
<FS3> Selia rolls Cooking: Failure.
The joint is badly burnt, though Selia attempts to cut away the worse and boil the rest, it doesn't seem to help much, it might have even made it worse... Who hired her as a cook again?
Selia sighs, "good thing there is plenty of ale." she mutters as she takes the pot of stuff out and buries it. "hmm" she checks out her sour dough started and wonders if there is enough to make pan cakes.
If people were getting hungry from the smells before, they seem to have mostly changed their minds as the charred meat fills the air with a new scent. There is still things to do since the attack and in general which are being tended to. The next meal is looking like it will prove interesting however. One of the other peasants does stop and asks, "Are you sure you want to be cooking stuff like that? We just got attacked by predators, you don't think those smells are going to draw more?"
Selia looks at the person asking the question, "oh well. I never thought of them coming back." she looks around and sighs. " Maybe some non meat meals? I have lentils and some dried beans. Maybe some mush." she frowns and sighs, Cooking is more political that she thought.
The man just shrugs and says, "As long as it doesn't bring more of those wolves down on us, it was harder enough killing those we had." as he turns to walk away.
Selia stands there for a long moment. Then gathering up all the meat and the pelt, she picks up the shovel and heads into the trees. He was right. all the blood is probly going to bring down the predators. She moves away from the camp keeping the rise of the hill on her left going up she walks for what seems to be quite a while. In reality is probly not more than 15 or 20 minutes. Then looking around making sure there are rocks about she digs the hole, buries all the stuff in the tarpaulin, and then covers it all with rocks to slow the predators down. folding the bloody tarp she heads back to the camp and the stream to clean up as much blood as possible.
