The Northern Natives
|
The peoples generally referred to as the "Northern Natives" is a collection of clans that share the same culture and who have always inhabited the same territory. Their extremely isolationist policies have left Felaguria and most of the world oblivious to their very existence. The singular exception is the Nation of Ningo who encountered these clans during their flight from their original landing places to the lands they now occupy. The Ningo learned quickly that these clans are extremely territorial, willing to kill or drive out anyone that enters their lands. The Ningo suffered very heavy casualties in their flight to find refuge from these natives, and to this day fear them. The Nothern Natives are masters of stealth and guerrilla tactics in their home territory. Using bone weapons, leather armor, and hides and pelts as clothing and protective gear against the local environs, these enigmatic clans are one of the biggest secrets of the Unknown World.
They are most easily identified by their use of narwhal tusks as spears or javelins, their bone weapons, and their use of Dire Caribou as mounts. The Dire Caribou has an immensely strong influence on their culture as they are used as mounts, beasts of burden, pets, sources of food and hides; they are even treated as family.
The most unique aspect of their culture is that all of the clans are scattered about to minimize their impact on the limited resources. Yet all of the clans share the same culture and beliefs to the point where they never war on one another, even over resources. Instead the clans trade with each other on fair terms any time there is a need for something. No two individuals from the same clan are allowed to marry, even though clans consist of a few family groups. Instead pairings are always shared between clans so that one individual is given to another clan to keep diversity of the bloodlines. Every clan trades with every surrounding clan, and those clans do the same. Trade goods are often bartered as needed from one clan to another until the item is not longer of use.
The clans believe their people are "good" and that the borders of their territory are the "edge of the world". Everything from beyond the "edge of the world" is evil and must be killed or driven back beyond the edge. It is for this reason anyone who enters these lands do not remain long as they either leave those lands, or are left a corpse in the snow.
